What to prepare
1. Possible ways to express contrast. Using a different contrast expression each time (p. 73)
(unlike, on the other hand, however, whereas, while)
E.g. Italians don’t like spicy food. Koreans like spicy food.
Unlike Italians, Koreans like spicy food.
Whereas Italians don’t like spicy food, Koreans do.
Italians don’t like spicy food; however, Koreans do, etc.
2. Correct the incorrect parallelisms (p.83)
E.g. She likes to draw, paint and making flower arrangements.
CORRECT: She likes to draw, paint and make flower arrangements.
3. Sentence Transitions (p. 84)
E.g.
People in my country prefer spicy food. (kimchi)
(good transition): Kimchi is a good example.
(weak transition): A good example is kimchi.
I like all of my teachers. (my math teacher)
(good transition) I like all of my teachers. My math teacher is my favourite/
(weak transition): I like all my teachers. My favourite is my math teacher.
4. Paragraph transitions (p. 102)
A transition from one paragraph to another may be done in three ways:
a) by a transition word ( “first of all”, “in fact”, etc.)
b) A word or words from the last sentence in the previous paragraph
c) An idea from the last paragraph
E.g.
(Previous paragraph) xxx xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx. Xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx. (last sentence) I really like Korean food.
(Next paragraph – first sentence).
a) In fact, I can eat tubu kimchi every day.
b) Korean food is healthy and delicious.
c) Some Korean dishes are easy to cook, whereas others are quite complicated.
5. Write a conclusion paragraph
a) summary, b) evaluation, c) prediction
6. Write a short (150 words) paragraph (free topic)
a) compare and contrast (72)
b) persuasive paragraph (82)
