ECW: WRITTEN EXAM, Dec. 4th


Please, prepare the following for your final, 2-hour written exam in your regular classroom.

What to expect in your written exam?

Your exam will have two components:
Part One: shorter writing
a) apply 'little things' you learned; look at no. 1 in the guide below.
b) Provide either: attention grabber, topic sentence, the guide, conclusion, missing paragraph in the body of the composition

Part Two:

Short paragraph writing (expository: facts and examples; compare and contrast; cause and effect; persuasive paragraph; letter to myself (goals); a short newspaper article ‘paragraph’ (containing simple answers to questions: who? What? When? Where? Why?) .
Part One:

PART ONE:

1. “Smaller things” we learned:
a
) using conjunctions: and, but, so (p. 20)
e.g. Please connect: He can sing very well. His dancing is not so great.
He can sing very well, but his dancing is not so great.
OR Please, correct if you think correction is needed:
Yuki is a hard worker. But she is always very tired.
Yuki is a hard worker, but she is always tired.
b)
using commas (p. 68)
e.g. Correct the following sentences, if you think they are incorrect:
Mini skirts preferred by men are fashionable again.
Mini skirts, preferred by men, are fashionable again.
c)
expressions that show contrast: unlike, on the other hand, however, whereas (73)
Please, read the sentences below and write a contrasting sentence for each, using different expressions:
I speak many languages. My father doesn’t speak any languages.
Unlike my father, I speak many languages.
I speak many languages. On the other hand my father doesn’t.
I speak many languages, whereas my father doesn’t.
I speak many languages, while my father doesn’t.
I speak many languages. My father, however, doesn’t (speak many languages).

In the following sentences use different expressions to make different suggestions (strong, somewhat strong and weak)
Late for an interview (strong): You must not be late for an interview.
Arrive a little early (somewhat strong): You had better arrive early.
Wear bright colour jacket (weak): You may not want to wear a bright colour jacket.

Correct the following sentences: I like cooking, dancing and to go out.
I like cooking, dancing and going out.
f)
sentence transitions (84)
Make the sentence transitions for the following sentences:
People in Korea prefer spicy food. (kimchi)
People in Korea prefer spicy food. Kimchi is a good example.
g)
linking paragraphs (p. 102)
Link the last sentence of the previous paragraph with the first sentence of the paragraph that follows:
If I could go anywhere in the world, it’d be Asia. (Korea)
First of all, I’d like to visit Korea. (transition word)
Korea is the place I’d like to visit most (idea)
Asia has a lot of interesting places. (word)

Are these sentences correct?
Janet and Jane, of all my friends, is most loyal. (no)


2. You will be given a paragraph with the attention grabber and a topic sentence missing. You will have to write them.

3. You will be given an incomplete paragraph with just the attention grabber and the topic sentence. You will have to write a short paragraph (the ‘guide’ - the three subtopics that will be further written about in subsequent paragraphs).

4. You will be given a composition with all the paragraphs except the conclusion paragraph. You’d have to write it.

PART TWO (longer writing)

5. Write a paragraph that uses facts and examples to support its main points, e.g. I am a good/bad student (three reasons why with facts and/or examples). X. Y. is the best singer/actor/writer/teacher in the world because….

6. Write a short compare/contrast paragraph. “I am very different from my brother/sister for three reasons….” Movie and TV dramas are different…


7. Write a short cause/effect paragraph (before something happened, the event, after)

8. Write a short persuasive paragraph (why should you stop smoking/ start exercising, etc).
9. Personal goals (a letter to myself)
10. Write a short newspaper article (short! - basically answer to who? what? when? where? why? )
